About SCJ > Community

Since its founding in 1886, SC Johnson has operated with the understanding that it has a responsibility to make it's host communities better places for the company having been there. At the same time, we have worked to create favourable local environments in which to conduct and grow our business, knowing, as H.F. Johnson, Sr. stated, that we cannot have a healthy environment outside in the community. Reaffirming this philosophy, the SC Johnson strategic plan states that we will provide leadership for community improvement where we operate. As a community leader, SC Johnson can improve the local quality of life, stimulate job growth, protect the natural environment, and attract a talented, diverse and skilled work force.

Our community leadership efforts are part of the company's long-term commitment to sustainable development - doing our part to responsibly meet the economic, environmental and social needs of our stakeholders today, without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. We recognize that global sustainability will happen one community at a time. Thus, our efforts locally and globally must focus on advancing the three legs of sustainability: economic vitality, environmental health and social well-being. Not one of these can be achieved by itself. Rather they are interdependent. Therefore, these three pillars provide the direction toward which SC Johnson companies should target their community leadership efforts in two fundamental ways:

  • Philanthropic giving to charitable causes that increase the community's capacity to meet the needs of people who live and work there.
  • Community involvement by company management and employees that engages the company with interested stakeholders to improve the quality of life locally.

These guidelines have been created to provide assistance in the development of long-term community leadership strategies wherever we operate around the world. Assembled by the Office of Community Leadership Worldwide, they include specific, tactical examples of successful community involvement and charitable-giving programs from SC Johnson companies around the world as well as from our global headquarters' community in Racine. Through the sharing of "what works" ideas, SC Johnson companies can move forward globally with our community leadership strategy.

Focus spending on environment and community improvement programs that satisfy one of the 3 parts of sustainability:

  • Family values
  • Environmental health
  • Social well being
Organisations requesting assistance will need to prove the following in order to be considered for charitable contributions:

  • Is not for profit and tax exempt
  • Meets a clear social need in the community
  • Has a broad base of support within the community
  • Reflects favourably on the public image of the company
  • Has clearly stated, measurable and attainable objectives
  • Benefits a broad cross section of the community, including company employees and their families
